Early Life and Career
Johann De Kalb was born on June 12, 1721, in Hüttendorf, Bavaria. He was the son of a Lutheran pastor. De Kalb received a classical education and entered the military in 1743. He fought in the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War.
In 1768, De Kalb was sent to the United States as a military advisor to the Continental Army. He was impressed by the American cause and decided to stay in the United States and fight for independence.
Service in the Continental Army
De Kalb was appointed a major general in the Continental Army in 1777. He served under General George Washington and commanded the Maryland and Delaware troops. De Kalb was a skilled commander and was respected by both his troops and his fellow officers.
De Kalb played a key role in the Battle of Monmouth in 1778. He commanded the American right wing and held off the British advance. De Kalb's performance at Monmouth earned him the respect of the British commander, Sir Henry Clinton.
Death at the Battle of Camden
In 1780, De Kalb was sent to the South to command the Continental Army in the Carolinas. He faced a difficult task, as the British had a strong foothold in the region. De Kalb was defeated at the Battle of Camden in August 1780 and was killed in action.
De Kalb's death was a major loss for the Continental Army. He was a skilled commander and a respected leader. His death is still mourned by Americans today.
