My journey began in Edinburgh, a vibrant city steeped in history and culture. I spent several days exploring the iconic Edinburgh Castle, wandering the cobblestone streets of the Royal Mile, and immersing myself in the vibrant arts and music scene.
From Edinburgh, I ventured north to the Scottish Highlands, a region known for its stunning mountains, lush glens, and sparkling lochs. My first stop was Doune Castle, which served as the fictional Castle Leoch in Outlander. I couldn't help but feel a shiver of excitement as I walked through the same halls and courtyards that Claire and Jamie had roamed in the show.
Nestled in the heart of the Highlands, Loch Lomond is a breathtaking expanse of water surrounded by towering mountains. I took a boat tour that allowed me to admire the loch's pristine beauty and learn about its rich history. I even spotted a few Highland cows grazing on the lush hillsides.
One of the highlights of my trip was attending the Outlander Gathering, an annual event that brings together fans from around the world. I reveled in the camaraderie and shared my love for the show with fellow enthusiasts. I also had the opportunity to meet some of the cast members, who were incredibly gracious and welcoming.
Beyond the Outlander connections, I was eager to explore Scotland's rich history and culture. I visited the Culloden Battlefield, where the infamous battle took place in 1746, marking a turning point in Scottish history. The site is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the Highlanders in their struggle for independence.
I also made a pilgrimage to Glenfinnan Viaduct, the iconic railway bridge that featured prominently in the opening credits of Outlander. Standing on the bridge, I felt a sense of awe and wonder, imagining the Jacobite soldiers marching towards battle.
In addition to its historical significance, Scotland is also renowned for its natural beauty. I spent several days hiking in the Cairngorms National Park, where I was rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. I also visited the Isle of Skye, which boasts dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and a stunning coastline.
As my adventure drew to a close, I realized that I had not only visited the filming locations of my favorite show but had also fallen deeply in love with the country itself. Scotland is a land of stunning beauty, rich history, and warm-hearted people. I will cherish the memories of my Kiwi lass and Outlander fan adventure for a lifetime.
Here are some additional tips for planning your own Outlander-inspired trip to Scotland:
- Book your trip during the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn) to avoid the crowds but still enjoy pleasant weather.
- Rent a car to have the flexibility to explore at your own pace.
- Purchase an Outlander-themed tour guide to enhance your experience at filming locations.
- Attend the Outlander Gathering for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet the cast and fellow fans.
- Don't forget to pack your hiking boots and raincoat, as the Scottish weather can be unpredictable.
