Collaborative ethnography is a research method that involves working closely with members of a community to study their culture and way of life. This method is often used to study marginalized or underrepresented groups, as it allows researchers to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences and perspectives.

In this article, I present a case study of a collaborative ethnography project that was conducted with a group of high school students. The project explored the students' experiences of school and learning. The article discusses the benefits and challenges of involving students in the research process and provides recommendations for other researchers who are considering using collaborative ethnography.

Methods

The project was conducted over a period of six months. I worked with a group of 10 students from a local high school. The students were all from different backgrounds and had a variety of experiences with school.

I used a variety of methods to collect data, including:

  • Interviews
  • Observations
  • Focus groups
  • Document analysis

I also worked with the students to develop a research plan and to analyze the data.

Results

The project found that the students had a variety of experiences with school. Some students enjoyed school and found it to be a positive experience. Other students found school to be challenging and did not feel like they were learning.

The project also found that the students' experiences with school were influenced by a variety of factors, including their race, gender, and socioeconomic status. Students from marginalized groups were more likely to have negative experiences with school.

Discussion

The findings of this project suggest that collaborative ethnography can be a valuable method for studying the experiences of marginalized groups. This method allows researchers to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that these groups face.

However, there are also a number of challenges associated with using collaborative ethnography. One challenge is that it can be difficult to build trust with members of the community. Another challenge is that researchers may need to adapt their research methods to accommodate the needs of the community.

Overall, collaborative ethnography is a valuable method for studying the experiences of marginalized groups. However, it is important to be aware of the challenges associated with this method before using it.

Recommendations

For researchers who are considering using collaborative ethnography, I recommend the following:

  • Build trust with members of the community.
  • Be flexible and adaptable in your research methods.
  • Involve members of the community in the research process.
  • Use the research findings to make a positive impact on the community.

Collaborative ethnography is a powerful method for studying the experiences of marginalized groups. This method can provide researchers with a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that these groups face. However, it is important to be aware of the challenges associated with this method before using it.
