A Deep Dive Into the Creative Process
Conversations On Craft is a new series of articles that explores the creative process of theatre makers. In each article, two theatre makers engage in a dialogue about their work, their influences, and their inspirations.
The first article in the series features a conversation between playwright Sarah Ruhl and director Rebecca Taichman. Ruhl is the author of such plays as The Clean House, Eurydice, and In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play). Taichman is a Tony Award-winning director whose work includes the Broadway productions of The Glass Menagerie, Indecent, and Angels in America.
In their conversation, Ruhl and Taichman discuss the importance of collaboration, the challenges of adapting literary works for the stage, and the role of the audience in the creative process.
On Collaboration
Ruhl: I think collaboration is essential to the creative process. I love working with other people, and I find that it often leads to better work than I could have produced on my own.
Taichman: I agree. Collaboration is essential for me, too. I love the way that different perspectives can come together to create something new and unexpected.
On Adapting Literary Works
Ruhl: I've adapted a number of literary works for the stage, and I find that it's a challenging but rewarding process. The challenge is to find a way to translate the work to the stage without losing its essence.
Taichman: I've also adapted a number of literary works, and I agree that it's a challenge. But I also think that it's a great opportunity to explore the work in a new way.
On the Role of the Audience
Ruhl: I think that the audience plays a vital role in the creative process. The audience is the one who completes the work, and they bring their own interpretations and experiences to the performance.
Taichman: I agree. The audience is essential to the creative process. They're the ones who bring the work to life.
Conversations On Craft is a fascinating and insightful look into the creative process of theatre makers. The series is a must-read for anyone interested in theatre, performance, or art.
